Master of Family Medicine

Programme team

The team is comprised of academic and administrative staff from the University of Edinburgh and our international partners. Visiting tutors, who are often prominent family doctors in the field, are also invited to contribute.

Professor David Weller Programme Co-Director David is Professor of General Practice at the University of Edinburgh. His main research interests are cancer, ‘medically unexplained symptoms’, and evidence-based primary care. His work in cancer focuses on the role of primary care in screening, early diagnosis and management. The main emphasis of the work on medically unexplained symptoms has so far been on patients who are frequently referred from primary to secondary care - we are interested in developing new ways of responding to the needs of these individuals. 
Professor Liz Grant Programme Co-Director Liz is a Senior Lecturer in Global Health and Development. Her teaching and research areas include public health research, global health workforce issues and palliative care. Professor Grant works part time for the National Health Service (NHS) Lothian as an international health advisor and African Health and Social Care specialist.
Dr Robin Ramsay Clinical Programme Director

Dr Robin has worked with The University of Edinburgh since 2014 helping to initiate, develop and deliver the Master of Family Medicine programme.

He is currently working as a Family Doctor in Blackridge which is 30 miles West of Edinburgh.

Robin has a passion for Family Medicine and it’s contribution to Global Health. He has taken opportunities throughout his career to experience primary care settings around the world having worked in Uganda, the Philippines and Nepal. He is a past Chair of the Royal College of General Practitioners Junior International Committee and is an active member of the WONCA working party for Education. 

Michelle Hart E-learning and Online Community Business Manager Michelle has been working with the programme since it first started in 2014. She has considerable experience in designing and delivering online learning and has played a key role in developing the programme.
Adele Willoughby Programme Administrator Adele has worked with The University of Edinburgh for almost 12 years, and brings unique insight into customer engagement and management. As the programme's administrator, Adele contributes to the smooth running of programme operations and facilitating new and existing students to successfully complete their studies with us.

Dr Alan Barnard Family Doctor Dr Alan is one of the lead tutors on the programme. He is a family doctor in Cape Town, South Africa. He has special interests in primary palliative care, family medicine development and health sciences education. He enjoys enjoy outdoor pursuits, jogging, classical music and interesting conversations. He is an enthusiastic kitchen slave to his wife, Penny, who cooks beautifully when not running a busy primary care nursing practice, running marathons and studying. He is father to Laura who cooks and dances and works in online education, and Charlie who is a physiotherapist.
Dr Darien Cipta Family Doctor

Darien is a former student of the programme and is from Indonesia. He completed his Master of Family Medicine in 2017. Since that time he has been a valuable addition to the tutoring team. He is currently a family doctor with a particular interest in psychiatry. Darien's previous experience was practicing family medicine in small town in an eastern, small town island of Indonesia, before working in the Accident and Emergency department of an urban hospital for 3 years.

Dr Pin-Hsien Wu (aka Edgar Wu) Family Doctor

Dr Wu is a previous student from Taiwan. He completed his Master of Family Medicine in 2017. He has been practicing Family Medicine in Northern China and is currently on a small island as a Home Care doctor. His interest has been broadened to Community Health, and he has become a policy advocate, especially for the homebound and frail geriatric population. 

Dr Lin Watson Family Doctor, Teaching Fellow

Lin is a family doctor in a busy city centre practice in Edinburgh. She has a breadth and depth of experience in teaching under- and post-graduate medics. Having studied medicine at Edinburgh University, Lin then moved to London working in the field of paediatrics to obtain membership of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health. She has since been training and then working as a GP and teaching for over 15 years. She has interests in communication skills, reflection, women's health and global health improvement. Lin enjoys spending her spare time with her son and growing flowers and vegetables on her allotment.

Dr Felicity Knights GP Academic Clinical Fellow Felicity is a GP Academic Clinical Fellow, with research and teaching experience in community health and vulnerable groups, quality improvement and global health. She works clinically as a family doctor in South London and is part of the Migrant Health Research Group at St George’s, University of London. Her current international roles include international health and migrant health lead for the European Young Family Doctors Movement, and trustee of Afrinspire, an international development charity.

Dr Dave Fearon 

Teaching Fellow Dave has written and contributed to numerous articles and specialist region-specific research publications. In 2022, Dave received a 'Supervisor of the Year' nomination in the EUSA Teaching Awards and was quoted as the "best teacher to guide in research".
