What do you need to succeed?

Listen to academic staff and PhD students talk about the factors that have helped them to progress in their career.

There are many factors that can help someone to successfully progress through an academic career.  These include relevant experience, support, the possession of certain personal attributes and skills, and more.  You will hear from academics at different stages of their career talk about what has been helpful to them in progressing their career, and what they think is necessary for success.  This will help you to review the support and experience you have, and to consider how your own qualities and skills may influence your success.

Some of the ideas shared include:

  • building a good network, for support but also for research collaborations
  • having a good mentor and role models
  • building your research profile through post-dotoral research positions
  • trying to publish during your PhD
  • organising a seminar trip, possibly during a post-doctoral position, to publicise your research
  • finding your own research niche
