Histopathology Laboratory
The Histopathology Laboratory provides a comprehensive diagnostic service for a wide range of biopsy and necropsy submissions.
The laboratory is open from 9.00am-5.00pm from Monday to Friday and is staffed by a technical manager and a team of experienced technicians, with reports provided by qualified veterinary pathologists.
The standard routine biopsy service includes processing and haematoxylin & eosin staining and a full veterinary pathologist’s report. The histology laboratory caters for over 80 in- house clinicians and many external veterinary practices.
The technical staff is highly experienced in the use of a wide variety of specialist techniques including, general histochemistry, enzyme histochemistry, immunohistochemistry and cryotomy. Since 2005, we have also offered a referral service for muscle pathology and were the first veterinary histopathology laboratory in Europe set up specifically for this purpose. We now regularly receive muscle samples from throughout Europe.
In addition, the Histopathology Laboratory is involved in a wide range of research projects for in-house researchers at the University and a variety of external clients.
Diagnostic Biopsy Service
The turnaround time on this service is two to three working days. The standard routine biopsy service includes processing, haematoxylin and eosin staining and a full veterinary pathologist's report. There is an extra charge for any subsequent special stains that may be required. Samples should be submitted in 10% neutral buffered formalin.
Frozen /cryostat Services
The turnaround time on this service is one working day for diagnostic cryostats.
