Sam Ingram

2018 inductee

Samuel Ingram is a pioneer of disability sport with an inspiring track record of Paralympic success and World Championship glory.

Visually impaired with Monochromatism from birth, the Judoka burst onto the international scene in 2007 at the European Championships in Baku, claiming an impressive fifth place in his first representative appearance for Great Britain. From thereon, he has established himself as one of the world’s leading Judo players, with prolific competitive success in all the major global competitions, including European and World Championships, and three Paralympic Games.

Sam’s first major championship medal was a Silver at the 2007 World Games in Sao Paulo before going on to claim a magnificent bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics as well as a silver medal at the 2010 World Championships in Antalya. Sam has twice been European Champion, winning gold in London in 2011 and again achieving top spot in 2013 in Eger, Hungary. At the London 2012 Paralympic Games, he added a further silver medal to his collection, cementing his place as the most decorated athlete in British Judo’s Paralympic Programme.

Over recent years, his medal count has continued across a raft domestic and international events, including silver at the World Games in Seoul in 2015, gold at the Visual Impaired Grand Prix in Birmingham in 2016 and more gold at the 2017 IBSA Judo World Cup in Tashkent, the latter of which he earned while studying towards his Masters degree at the University. Sam also represented Team GB at the 2016 Rio Paralympics placing a very impressive fifth. He is currently working hard towards another Para Games appearance in Tokyo 2020.

Samuel Ingram is an exceptional and inspiring Judo player, and becomes the first athlete with a disability to be inducted in the University’s Sports Hall of Fame.
