Animal research

Alternatives and improvements

We aim to replace, reduce and refine the use of animals in research.

The University is committed to the principles of the 3Rs – replacing, reducing and refining the use of animals in research to minimise the effects on the animals concerned.

We hold an annual symposium for staff that are involved in animal research, with presentations from invited speakers and a poster competition. The aim is to share best practice and publicise recent contributions to the 3Rs across different animal species and disciplines.

Replacement

We strive to use alternative research methods wherever possible to replace the need for using animals.

Reduction

We aim to use as few animals as possible in our research.

Refinement

Refinement of our practices enables us to improve conditions for animals.
