Background

Abdishakur Diriye is a Ph.D. student at The Global Academy of Agriculture and Food Systems at the University of Edinburgh, and Jameel Observatory studying Climate Change and Food Security Early Action in the Horn of African drylands. After obtaining his bachelor’s degree in economics and management Science from Mogadishu University in Somalia, Abdishakur pursued a master’s in public administration at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) as a Chinese Belt & Road Scholarship awardee. During his time at USTC, he has taken on research tasks and published journal articles on climate change adaptation, charcoal-driven deforestation, and public participation and acceptability in decisions to mitigate environmental degradation which inspired him to pursue a second MSc in Environmental Policy and Management at the University of Bristol as a Chevening scholar. He published research papers on climate change adaptation, charcoal-driven deforestation, land degradation, and public participation and acceptability in decisions to mitigate environmental degradation.

His PhD research focuses on developing appropriate early financing mechanisms for pastoralists facing drought risks in Somalia. He uses climate services and explores the existing forecast-based and drought index livestock insurance programs in the Horn of Africa in terms of indicators, thresholds, trigger points, and verification metrics to evaluate their effectiveness and to tailor them to the pastoral unique economic structures, and worldviews.
