Information about eligibility and the application process for the McIntosh-Patterson PhD studentship

The Angus McIntosh Centre for Historical Linguistics offers a fully paid studentship once every three years. The successful applicant’s primary research focus is expected to be on any aspect of historical linguistics that is within the expertise of the staff of Linguistics and English Language at Edinburgh.

Funding

  • This scholarship is funded by the Angus McIntosh Centre for Historical Linguistics.
  • The award provides full-time tuition fees (UK/EU or overseas level) with an annual stipend for three years.

Eligibility

  • Successful applicants will have a very good undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline and ideally will have, or will be studying for, a postgraduate masters degree (or equivalent).
  • Existing PhD students (i.e. those in their 1st or 2nd year of doctoral study) are not eligible for this award.

  • Applicants are encouraged to make contact with the School as soon as possible to register their interest in this funding opportunity as this will allow the School to track the progress of your application. Please email the School Postgraduate Team to register interest. It is also useful for applicants to contact potential supervisors early in the process to assist in the application process.
  • Applicants must complete the University of Edinburgh application form for the relevant PhD programme. Once this application has been submitted, applicants will receive email confirmation from the system including their User Name (UUN). PhD application deadline: 13 November 2023.
