Martyn Campbell (1955-2013)

David Brook remembers Martyn Campbell, Senior Janitor for Old College.

Martyn Campbell

Martyn joined the University as a Servitor on 30 May 2005.

Previously, he had worked for more than 35 years in various roles within the printing industry, including a four-year spell as a graphic designer at Spain's 'Euro Weekly News'.

But it was at Edinburgh where Martyn found the job he loved.

He was always the first to volunteer to learn a new skill, and he became the Estates & Buildings 'resident expert' in mail-franking machines having, by his own admission, read all the manuals in his own time.

Martyn was always keen to offer help around the University, and in early 2011 he worked at the new Vet School in the run-up to its opening. His professional and friendly approach earned him widespread praise from staff, students and contractors alike.

Shortly afterwards, he was promoted to Janitor in Old College, and in December 2013 he was further promoted to Senior Janitor.

Martyn took great pride in Old College, particularly the Playfair Library, and he worked tirelessly to ensure that everyone who attended functions there left with the highest opinion of the University.

In 2013 he received the Outstanding Personal Contribution Award at the Edinburgh Sustainability Awards, for his work in promoting the sustainability agenda around Old College.

Martyn was a passionate Bournemouth FC and Hearts supporter and often travelled to Bournemouth's away games.

He is survived by his wife Isobel and will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
