Honorary Professor: Benjamin Stenson

Professor Stenson studied Medicine at Edinburgh, graduating in 1986.

Benjamin James Stenson has been made an Honorary Professor in the College of Medicine & Veterinary Medicine.

He specialised in paediatrics, training mainly in Edinburgh, with brief periods in Bristol and Birmingham.

His main research interests have been related to neonatal respiratory physiology and monitoring.

He wrote his MD about studies of lung mechanics in ventilated newborn infants.

He went on to publish studies in this area and, more recently, in the monitoring of oxygenation.

Professor Stenson has a strong interest in neonatal clinical trials and has been a senior investigator in several large multicentre and international trials.

He is also interested in neonatal sepsis and is working on molecular diagnostic tools in collaboration with the division of pathway medicine.

He is a consultant neonatologist, the clinical lead for neonatology at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and the Director of the South East Scotland Neonatal Transport Service.

He is also a member of the neonatal group of the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation.

For more than 10 years he has been an editor of the neonatal edition of 'Archives of Disease in Childhood'.

He is married to an Edinburgh GP and away from work enjoys outdoor pursuits and all high-calorie activities.
