Honorary Professor: Richard Mitchell

Professor Mitchell gained his BSc (Hons) and PhD from the geography department at the University of Southampton.

Professor Richard Mitchell has been made an honorary professor in the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine.

He was subsequently schooled in public health and epidemiology, working with Professors Heather Joshi and Mel Bartley at City University, London.

He also worked with Professor Danny Dorling at the Universities of Bristol and Leeds.

Professor Mitchell joined the Research Unit in Health, Behaviour and Change at the University of Edinburgh in 2001, working under Professor Steve Platt.

He became Associate Director at RUHBC in 2004.

In 2007 he moved to the Institute of Health and Wellbeing at the University of Glasgow, and became Professor of Health and Environment in 2009.

Earlier in his career his research focused on monitoring and exploring socio-economic and geographic inequalities in health and how they might be narrowed.

Today, his focus is on the potential for environments to positively influence population health and health inequalities.

He is a co-founder of the Centre for Research on Environment, Society and Health, which is shared by the Universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow.
