Honorary Professor: Richard John Ibbetson

Richard John Ibbetson has been made Honorary Professor in the College of Medicine & Veterinary Medicine.

He graduated in 1974 from Guy’s Hospital Dental School, London and later completed his postgraduate studies at the Eastman Dental Institute, London.

He subsequently spent 20 years at the Eastman as a member of staff.

In 1999, he became the first Director of the Edinburgh Postgraduate Dental Institute at the University of Edinburgh, holding a Chair in Primary Dental Care.

The remit was to develop an institute with a focus on opportunities for postgraduate education both for dentists and dental care professionals.

He is currently Professor of Restorative Dentistry at Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary College, University of London.

His major interests lie in the field of dental education. He is active in research both in this area and in Fixed Prosthodontics, his particular clinical interest.

Professor Ibbetson is currently Dean of the Dental Faculty of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

He lives in Edinburgh and is married with three teenage children.
