Infection Medicine

Infection Medicine at the Midlothian Science Festival 2021

We are delighted to offer three virtual "Meet the Scientist" sessions in the Midlothian Science Festival Schools programme.

The Midlothian Science Festival runs from 17th -25th October 2021. Infection Medicine senior postdoc Dr Samantha Griffiths and PhD students Pujitha Raja, Nelly Mak and Sarah Yusoff  will interact virtually with pupils from Midlothian schools in their classroom about their research and their journey of becoming research scientists.

About our Scientists

Sam Griffiths

Dr Samantha Griffiths

Sam is a virologist and Senior Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Infection Medicine. She has been living and working in Edinburgh for 17 years. Sam's current work focuses on trying to find out more about the ways we can fight off viruses, and how the viruses can escape our own defences.

Pujitha Raja

Pujitha Raja

Pujitha is from India and is doing a PhD in Dr Thamarai Dorai-Schneiders' lab. Her PhD involves molecular biology and cloning techniques. Her research involves working with an infectious bug – Klebsiella pneumoniae and figuring out how it is so resistant against drugs, causing many untreatable antibiotic infections.

Sarah Yusoff & Nelly Mak

Sarah and Nelly

Sarah and Nelly are offering a joint "Meet the Scientist" session.

Sarah is from Malaysia and is doing a PhD in Prof Jurgen Haas' lab. Her motivation for doing research is to protect people from viruses, such as the one she was working with called Herpes simplex virus type 1 , which can cause cold sores and blisters around the mouth.

Nelly is from Hongkong and is doing a PhD in Dr Richard Sloan's lab. Through her research, she is trying to understand how cells in our body protect themselves from viruses like influenza virus and coronavirus.

The Midlothian Science Festival School Programme

The Midlothian Science Festival Schools Programme is run as part of the Midlothian Science Festival, a small Scottish charity. The schools programme is coordinated by the Easter Bush Science Outreach Centre and is made possible by local scientists and STEM organisations that offer exciting, interesting and inspiring workshops for our Midlothian learners.

The Midlothian Science Festival Schools Programme 2021 has been launched on Monday 23rd August. Please download the full programme here.
