SHCA Archaeological Science Internships 2021

Two archaeological science internships are available to undergraduate archaeology students for summer 2021.

Two archaeological science internships are available to undergraduate archaeology students for summer 2021 (between Monday 2nd – Friday 20th August). These are aimed at helping students to develop experience, knowledge, skills and employability, and providing the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to research projects. Internships will be based in one of the SHCA labs and last three weeks and can be used to fulfil fieldwork requirements. These volunteer positions will be supervised by the archaeology lab technician, with extra topic-specific supervision from academic staff where relevant.

Archaeological science internships

Both internships will involve three weeks working on a range of archaeological materials relating to a number of SHCA staff research project. It is anticipated that activities will include:

  • collagen extraction from animal bones for carbon and nitrogen stable isotope analysis;
  • post-excavation processing, identification and recording of artefacts and animal and plant remains from Early to Middle Holocene shell midden sites;
  • experimental investigation of the effects of heating on the oxygen isotope values of ostrich eggshell.

Internships will be awarded through a competitive process managed by the SHCA laboratories committee.
