Training for Ethical Counselling Work with Queer and Gender Expansive People

The workshop is funded by the Student Experience Grants 2024 and will be facilitated by a team of academics, including lecturers and PhD students, who will guide participants through various learning experiences. These experiences will allow participants to reflect on and apply concepts from queer theory to their practice. The workshop will address the following objectives:

  1. Utilize didactic, experiential, and interpersonal learning to highlight strengths and areas for growth in working with queer, trans, and gender-expansive individuals. This will include informational resources, small group discussions, and role plays to practice relevant counselling skills.
  2. Discuss personal and systemic barriers to integrating Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) for queer and TGE individuals throughout counselling training. Concrete strategies for integrating JEDI concepts into the counselling curriculum and clinical practice will be explored.
  3. Reflecting on changes in competency through engagement with the Gender Identity Counselor Competency Scale- Revised before and after the workshop.

The workshop will be held on Friday 3rd May at the University of Edinburgh from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. It is open to counselling students, as well as students in clinical psychology, nursing studies, and health-related disciplines. The workshop will provide a valuable opportunity to critically explore topics related to LGBTQIA+ experiences and increase knowledge, awareness, and skills in working with these populations.

We encourage you to attend and contribute to the dialogue about counselling with queer, TGE, and other marginalised groups. Your participation will help create connections between participants and foster learning and awareness.

Please RSVP via email by 26th April to confirm your attendance. Spaces are limited to 60 participants. To book, or if you have any questions or require further information, please don't hesitate to contact Edgar Rodríguez-Dorans at edgar.rodriguez-dorans@ed.ac.uk

We look forward to your participation in this important workshop!
