Refurbished Godfrey Thomson Hall

The Small Projects and Minor Works Team recently completed an upgrade to Godfrey Thomson Hall, in Thomson’s Land, Holyrood Campus.

After the exam diet in May, Godfrey Thomson Hall was closed in preparation for refurbishment works which involved the upgrading of the centrally-bookable teaching space and creating new toilet facilities. A quick turnaround was required, the project lead Cheryl McCord, Architectural Technologist, our Learning Spaces Technology AV team and the contractor, SJS Property Services worked hard to ensure the space was reopened in time for Welcome Week and Semester One teaching.

All students and staff can now enjoy the refreshed and sensitively modernised space which has new LED lighting, carpets, paintwork, full AV installation and windows. Most of the original features of the room have remained and restored, including perimeter wooden panelling, stained a bold black to ensure a consistent finish through the space.

As part of the works an under-utilised stage was removed allowing for the room's capacity to be increased by 30 additional chairs. This also revealed two hidden original windows, now restored and flooding the room with more natural light. SJS’s joinery workshop seamlessly re-created some infill panelling to match the existing wall panelling, where the stage was removed.

As well as upgrading the teaching room, an adjacent storage space was transformed into an accessible toilet and a gender neutral toilet. This is part of the Estates Department’s commitment to improving accessibility and toilet facility provision across the estate.
