Congrats to Prof David Willshaw on VB Award 2016

Valentino Braitenberg Award for Computational Neuroscience

Many congratulations to Professor David Willshaw from the University of Edinburgh, who has won the Valentino Braitenberg Award for Computational Neuroscience . The award ceremony will take place during the Bernstein Conference in Berlin.

David Willshaw's major research interest is the application of the methods of computational neurobiology - mathematical analysis and computer simulation - to an understanding of the development and functioning of the nervous system.

  • Currently Professor of Computational Neurobiology within the Institute for Adaptive and Neural Computation, School of Informatics, University of Edinburgh.
  • Involved with Edinburgh Imaging - Computational models of development of the nervous system 
  • PhD thesis, "Models of Distributed Associative Memory", completed in 1971 at the University of Edinburgh under the supervisor of Christopher Longuet-Higgins.

His specific areas of interest are:

  • The mechanisms by which retinotopically ordered projections and patterns of ocular dominance are developed between vertebrate eye and brain.
  • The mechanisms for the elimination of polyinnervation in developing muscle.
  • The functioning of the basal ganglia and related structures and their role in Parkinson's Disease.
  • The role of the mammalian hippocampus, cerebellum and neocortex in the associative storage and retrieval of information in the brain.
  • Development of novel algorithms for combinatorial optimisation problems, such as the Travelling Salesman Problem.

The Braitenberg Award will be conferred on September 21, 2016, within the framework of the Bernstein Conference in Berlin which takes place in the main building of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Unter den Linden 6. The award ceremony - including a lecture by the awardee - will start at 3 p.m.
