Former PM helps historian bid farewell
Former Prime Minister Gordon Brown will play a role at an event celebrating the career of eminent historian Tom Devine.
Mr Brown will be in conversation with Professor Devine at a public forum to mark his upcoming departure from the University in the McEwan Hall on Monday, 16 June.
The event - Scotland’s Past and Scotland’s Present - will explore facets of the nation’s modern history at a crucial time for the country.

Distinguished career
The event is being held to celebrate 45 years of academic service since 1969 by Tom Devine to the Universities of Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Strathclyde.
Professor Devine is the only historian to have been awarded Scotland’s premier academic accolade, the Royal Medal by HM The Queen.
He is the only living scholar in the humanities and social sciences in the UK to have been elected to the three learned academies in the British Isles: Royal Society of Edinburgh, Royal Irish Academy and the British Academy (FRSE, HonMRIA, FBA).
He is currently the Personal Senior Research Chair of History at the University of Edinburgh and Director of the University’s Scottish Centre for Diaspora Studies.
I have enjoyed my time at the University tremendously and am very proud of the achievements the Centre for Diaspora Studies. I have met some inspiring colleagues, many of whom I now call friends. This is one of the most exciting and creative times in Scotland’s history and it has been an extraordinary experience to be part of it.
Book signing
After the discussion in McEwan Hall, there will be an opportunity to meet the speakers for a book signing.
Broadcaster and journalist Jim Naughtie will chair the question and answer session with the audience.
