Two units of the College achieve a Gender Equality Charter Mark Bronze level

Equality Challenge Unit's (ECU) gender equality charter mark has recognised the School of Divinity and the Institute of Physical Education, Sport and Health Sciences for their progress in advancing gender equality in arts, humanities and social science careers in higher education.

Both units have achieved Bronze level in the trial gender equality charter mark, which aims to address chronic gender imbalance and underrepresentation in the arts, humanities and social sciences. They are two units among 17 individual departments recognised throughout the UK.

Bronze level is the first step in the process, showing a strong commitment to specific actions and building a culture that will improve the representation, progression and success of both staff and students.

We hope that the gender equality charter mark will have the same positive effect for these subjects as Athena SWAN has had on women in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine. I commend the work of all the participants so far, and look forward to seeing the impact of their actions as they move up to silver and gold levels in the future.

Across the UK, awards have gone to five universities and 17 individual departments in the arts, humanities and social sciences.

Teamwork by groups of academic staff, administrative staff, and postgraduate students, and by contributions from all the staff and postgraduates who responded to 'gender culture' surveys, lead to these two successful submissions.
