Can I apply from the UK?
If you want to apply for another Student visa (extend your visa) or switch to a Student visa, you will need to make sure you can do so from the UK.
When you can apply from the UK
If you already hold a Tier 4/Student visa
You can apply for another Student visa in the UK if you meet all the following requirements:

you have successfully completed your most recent programme
-
you will study a degree-level programme that represents academic progression from your previous studies in the UK
-
you have enough time remaining for your studies (according to the time limits condition of your visa)
-
you will apply for your new visa before your current visa ends
-
your new programme will start no more than 28 days after your current visa ends
There are some exceptions to these requirements. For example, students completing a PhD can apply to extend their Student visa if they need more time to finish their studies. These students don’t need to meet the requirement for academic progression.

If you hold another type of visa
You can switch to a Student visa in the UK if you meet all the following requirements:

you will apply for your new visa before your current visa ends
-
your new programme will start no more than 28 days after your current visa ends

your current visa is one that allows you to switch to a Student visa

When you cannot apply from the UK
You cannot apply for a Student visa in the UK if you:

have overstayed your visa
-
are here on a visa that doesn’t allow you to switch (for example, a Standard Visitor visa)
Needing extra time to finish your studies
You cannot apply to extend your visa if you need extra time to complete your studies, unless you meet certain requirements, for example you are finishing your PhD.

Starting a new programme before finishing your current one
You cannot apply for another Student visa for a new programme without having completed your most recent programme, unless you meet one of the following requirements:

you are applying to study the higher level of an integrated degree

you are applying for extra time to complete a medical, veterinary medicine, veterinary science or dentistry qualification with an intercalated year
