University of Edinburgh Professor Themis Prodromakis has been awarded the 2025 Princess Royal Silver Medal from the Royal Academy of Engineering.
Professor Prodromakis received the honour for his outstanding personal contribution to UK engineering through his work on emerging semiconductor technologies for sustainable AI hardware.
Professor Prodromakis, one of just two academics awarded the medal this year, is based in the University’s College of Science and Engineering and holds the Regius Chair of Engineering and Director of the Centre for Electronics Frontiers. He is an internationally recognised pioneer of emerging electronic memory technologies and his research focuses on energy-efficient hardware solutions for AI and bioelectronics.
I am delighted to receive The Princess Royal Silver Award. It is a remarkable honour to get this recognition and it reflects the high-quality research done by all our researchers in the Centre for Electronics Frontiers.

Professor Prodromakis is also Director of the UKRI APRIL Hub which unites the electronics and AI communities in the UK through developing AI tools that boost productivity across the entire electronics industry supply chain. He also holds a Royal Academy of Engineering Chair in Emerging Technologies. His tools, technologies and capabilities are commercially exploited and support the Research and Development of more than 300 international groups and industry.
