The SSAC is Scotland’s highest-level science advisory body, providing independent advice and recommendations on science strategy, policy and priorities to the Scottish Government. It plays a vital role in ensuring that policy decisions are informed by the latest scientific evidence and expertise.

Professor Gareth Harrison, Bert Whittington Chair of Electrical Power Engineering in the School of Engineering, said:

“I am delighted to have been appointed to the SSAC and to be joining a number of established and new Edinburgh colleagues. I am very much looking forward to working with the Council to assist the Scottish Government as it develops its policies across a wide range of areas of importance to the public.”

Professor Julie Jacko, Professor of Health Informatics and Data Science, Interim Director of the Usher Institute and the Dean of Innovation and Engagement in the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, said:

“My appointment to the SSAC is an immense honour. I look forward to advising Scottish Government on science policy, priority and strategy, knowing that Scotland’s potential as a science and innovation nation is boundless.”

Doctor Kirsten Jenkins, Senior Lecturer in Science, Technology and Innovation Studies in the School of Social and Political Science, College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, said:

“I am delighted to be joining the SSAC and to strengthen the representation of social science perspectives within the Council. Scotland’s scientific advancements must be seen through a technical and social lens. Membership provides an important opportunity not just to brief the Chief Scientific Adviser for Scotland and Scottish Ministers on world-leading scientific advancements, but to ensure that these contributions support Just Transition goals and reduce inequality.”

Professor Gareth Harrison and Professor Julie Jacko have been appointed full members. Doctor Kirsten Jenkins has been appointed an Associate Member.
