Chief Financial Officer appointed

James Gray has been appointed as the University’s Chief Financial Officer.

James is a Chartered Public Finance Accountant who has worked in the public and private sectors, most recently as Chief Financial Officer at Police Scotland. He previously served as Chief Financial Officer at Shetland Islands Council and with accountancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP.

The Chief Financial Officer is responsible for the financial stewardship of the University and its financial strategy, and leads and directs the University’s Directorate of Finance. Ensuring an effective and proactive financial service that provides robust financial management, the role also ensures institutional financial sustainability and supports the achievement of the University’s strategic objectives.

James will take up the position at the University in October 2025.

Drawing on my extensive experience in the public and private sectors, I look forward to working with the University Executive and colleagues in Finance and across the University to successfully deliver our strategic objectives and ensure long-term financial sustainability. 

I am delighted that James will be taking up this crucial role and I look forward to welcoming him to the University shortly. James will play a key role in addressing the current challenges the sector is facing, and his considerable experience in Finance will provide a long-term focus on leading, influencing and shaping our world-class future-focussed University.
