Public Engagement with Research

Coordinating with the College leads for public engagement, we support staff and PhD researchers to share their ideas, invite perspective and spark discussion with new audiences.

Public Engagement with Research describes the many ways we can share research with the public and listen in response. It is a two-way process that enables change and has mutual benefit. High-quality engagement can enhance the impact of research.

We support University of Edinburgh staff and PhD researchers to share their ideas, invite perspective and spark discussion with new audiences.

We do this by:

  • Providing guidance on public engagement with research.
  • Collaborating with Edinburgh’s Festivals.
  • Curating the Cabaret of Dangerous Ideas at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and the Stand Comedy Club every month.
  • Developing training opportunities with the Institute for Academic Development.
  • Coordinating a University-wide network of people interested in public engagement.
  • Representing the University on local and national public engagement networks.

The University Strategy 2030 emphasises the importance of engaging the public with research. Our activities are underpinned by the Support for Public Engagement with Research Statement from 2021. 

The University of Edinburgh are signatories of the Manifesto for Public Engagement.
