In the 19th century, for many of Edinburgh's private schools and over many years, 10% or more of pupils spent some of their working lives in India.

Edinburgh Academy: In the first 90 years of the school, at least 1,000 of its pupils were born in India, had fathers who worked in India, or themselves went to India to work.
