01 Apr 22. LBC Wave 6 update

The Lothian Birth Cohort Wave 6 is making great progress as well as continued enthusiasm from the participants. The Edinburgh Imaging Facilities also celebrated Valentine’s Day with couples from the study.

In October 2021 the Lothian Birth Cohort (LBC) began Wave 6 of the longitudinal study of cognition, the brain & general ageing. Wave 6 includes an MR scan at the Edinburgh Imaging Facility RIE (EIF RIE), and cognitive testing at the Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility (WTCRF).

The LBC team reports that Wave 6 of the LBC 1936 study has been progressing very well so far in 2022, and the team continue to be blown away by the enthusiasm and dedication of the participants.

At the time of publication, two key milestones have been met:

  • LBC Wave 6 have had 100 participants return to the WTCRF for cognitive testing appointments
  • 50 have attended the EIF RIE for an MR brain scan

In February, the testing team also celebrated Valentine’s Day with an unusual coincidence. At the first wave of the LBC 1936 study in 2004, a few of the 1091 participants were couples, some of whom still attend their LBC appointments together at every wave.

By chance, on Monday 14th February 2022, all available appointments were booked by couples: Alistair and Margaret spent Valentine’s Day at the WTCRF completing cognitive and physical tests, and John and Helen spent that afternoon at the EIF RIE, each having an MR brain scan.

The team look forward to seeing many more LBC 1936 participants throughout 2022 and beyond, and continuing with this great progress.
