Lecture title: Love and Law in Christianity and Islam
Date: Monday 4 March 2013
Venue: St Cecilia's Hall, Niddry Street
Lecture abstract
Christians and Muslims have engaged with each other’s doctrines and beliefs in various ways throughout history. While the Incarnation, Trinity and Muhammad’s prophecy became the most prominent themes for disagreement, running through many of these encounters was an implicit tension that Christianity is a religion of love while Islam is a religion of law. The two should not be perceived as opposing paradigms but love and law are often used to conceptualise both faiths in rather simplistic terms. This lecture will look at some of the discussions around the theme of love and law and argue that we can only understand the significance of love and law in each religion when we understand the structural differences of sin and evil in both religions.
