Course Description
This course asks students to consider landscape not as a physical entity, but as a social creation. In doing so it ask questions such as why some landscapes are considered beautiful, and others are not? Who decides how a landscape should look, and what it represents? How landscapes make us feel, and act in their presence? Using examples of artworks, films, policy documents, popular writing and media reports it will explore the various ways landscape is experienced, created, and put to use in a variety of geographical and historical contexts. Lectures will be supported by a series of tutorials in which students will explore landscape themes by drawing on their own observations, experiences and readings.
