This course is an introduction to the history of the Islamic world from c. 1050 to c. 1650, including the Seljuk empire, the Crusades, the Mongol invasions, the formation of the Ottoman and Safavid empires and the expansion of Islam into Africa and Asia. The impact of nomadic migrations, processes of state formation, conversion and Islamisation, and encounters between Christendom and Islam are all explored.
