Pre-requisites
Visiting students must have completed the equivalent of at least 4 semester-long Economics courses at grade B or above for entry to this course. This MUST INCLUDE courses in: Intermediate Macroeconomics (with calculus); Intermediate Microeconomics (with calculus); Probability & Statistics. If macroeconomics and microeconomics courses are not calculus-based, then, in addition, Calculus (or Mathematics for Economics) is required at grade B or above. In this course we will look at the development of three key areas of economic theory, Money, Capital and Interest, looking at the relationship between them and also exploring some debates and controversies in economic theory.
Course Description
In this course we will look at the development of three key areas of economic theory, Money, Capital and Interest. We will study the development in each area and also look at the relationship between them, in particular contrasting the monetary theories of interest with real theories related to capital. We will also explore some debates and controversies in economic theory. This may for example include the Banking School vs Currency School debate and/or the Cambridge Capital controversy.
Assessment Information
Written Exam 70%, Coursework 30%, Practical Exam 0%
Additional Restrictions
It is not suitable for students to take this course alongside Economics 2 (ECNM08006).
