Visiting students must have completed at least one Economics course equivalent to Economic Principles (ECNM08004) at grade B or above. We will only consider University/College level courses. Please see Additional Restrictions below.

Course Summary

The course is intended to illustrate the usefulness of basic economic principles in a varied range of, primarily applied, contexts. An understanding of basic economic principles at the level of: Mankiw and Taylor 'Economics' is presumed. The course is primarily aimed at students who want to obtain a broad but basic insight into applications of economics to contemporary economic issues, but do not intend (or do not want to keep open the option) to progress to further study of economics.

Course Description

The course is intended to illustrate the usefulness of basic economic principles in a varied range of, primarily applied, contexts. The contexts covered will vary from year to year. A typical year might include contexts drawn from: international economics; business cycles; game theory and behavioural economics; and information economics. The course is taught through a programme of lectures and tutorials. The course relies primarily on words, diagrams and numerical illustrations. The use of formal mathematics is limited and basic. Reading material for the course will be drawn from a variety of sources. An understanding of basic economic principles at the level of: Mankiw and Taylor 'Economics' is presumed. The course is primarily aimed at students who want to obtain a broad but basic insight into applications of economics to contemporary economic issues, but do not intend (or do not want to keep open the option) to progress to further study of economics.

Written Exam 75%, Coursework 25%, Practical Exam 0%

Additional Restrictions

It is not suitable for students to take this course alongside Economic Principles (ECNM08004) or Economics 2 (ECNM08006).
