Pre-requisites

Visiting students are advised that the level of chemistry in this course is at the second year university academic level and has a pre-requisite of 40 credits in first year chemistry for UoE students. This course is suitable for students who have completed at least 1 year of undergraduate chemistry.

Course Summary

Semester 1 lecture courses, tutorials, labs and workshops from the Chemistry 2 course. The course includes six weeks of inorganic chemistry and three weeks of physical chemistry laboratory sessions.

Course Description

This course comprises the Semester 1 material, including laboratory and course work, of the Chemistry 2 course. The course consists of the following lecture courses: Carbonyl Chemistry; Transition Metal Organometallic Chemistry 1; Heterocyclic Chemistry; Quantum Theory; Reaction Kinetics; Separation Techniques & Mass Spectrometry. The course includes six weeks of inorganic chemistry and three weeks of physical chemistry laboratory sessions.

Written Exam 60%, Coursework 40%, Practical Exam 0%

Additional Assessment Information

Semester 1 material is examined with a 3 hour paper in December diet. The coursework mark is determined from the performance in the Inorganic and physical teaching laboratories.
