Course Summary

Since few applicants to the University have prior qualifications in Scandinavian languages, the first-year ab-initio classes are the standard form of entry to the study of a Scandinavian language, so welcome to Scandinavian Studies at the University of Edinburgh, and thank you for choosing to study Norwegian! Course Description

Velkommen til Norwegian 1! On this one-year course in Scandinavian Studies you will learn to speak, understand, read and write the Norwegian language as well as learn the basics of the grammar, pronunciation and a good amount of vocabulary. The course is mostly based on language but also covers some aspects of Norwegian culture and civilisation, for example you will be doing a group presentation halfway through the first semester, and you will also get familiar with some Norwegian literature (including folk tales and a classic of children's literature). By the end of the course, the aim is to have reached CEFR level A2, as described in the learning outcomes. Breakdown of Learning & Teaching Activities: The teaching activities on this course have two different formats. Students attend two synchronous sessions per week (one with the whole class, and one tutorial lesson that is usually taught in two split groups), where students meet their tutor online or in person. The whole-class lesson will include discussion of grammar and other technical aspects of language production [Synchronous], while the smaller-group tutorial will focus on oral proficiency [Synchronous]. Other activities will be based on resources made available via the course Learn page, including written work, formal grammar teaching, video material, computer-assisted exercises, and links to articles from Norwegian newspapers and magazines available on the Internet [Asynchronous]. Each week, you are expected to prepare for the synchronous sessions by completing the asynchronous preparation outlined in that weeks instructions.

Additional Restrictions

This course cannot be taken alongside Danish 1 (ELCS08033 / ELCS08031), Swedish 1 (ELCS08027 / ELCS08032) or Norwegian 1 (ELCS08030). Auditing this course is not permitted.
