Course Summary
Spanish 1B is a language, literature and culture course for students with university entry qualifications in Spanish. One half of the course is dedicated to language studies and the other to the literature and culture of Spain and Spanish America. Language work is set at the equivalent of level B1 on the Common European Framework for Languages (CEFR). Classes develop written, oral and listening comprehension skills while the cultural elements of the course introduce students to a selection of works from the Spanish-speaking world and develop research, analytical and writing skills.
Course Description
Weekly written language contact hours are designed around the materials on Learn (the Virtual Learning Environment at the University of Edinburgh) and will develop your understanding and command of grammatical constructions and your ability to write and comprehend a variety of texts in Spanish. Oral classes, also weekly, develop spoken and listening comprehension skills. They are structured around 4 Spanish and 4 Latin American films and their sociopolitical contexts. The cultural half of Spanish 1B invites you to explore how diverse cultural forms have engaged with foundational moments in Spain and Spanish America. As well as a weekly lecture, students also attend weekly seminars. Independent class preparation and study are vital for all aspects of learning on the Spanish 1B course.
