Apabi Digital Library of Chinese e-books

Access information:Access on and off campus. Apabi e-books can be read online via a web browser or with Apabi Reader. To download Apabi Reader follow the link above and select the right version for your operating system.
For on campus access, Apabi Reader is available on all open-access lab PCs. From the program list, click on "Apabi Reader", and then choose Apabi Reader to open the program.
Description:Covers a wide range of subjects including language, literature, history, religion, and traditional Chinese medicine. There are about 5,000 Chinese e-books and 200 current yearbooks by region or subject.

Description:Indexes 13,000 journals in all disciplines. Many, but not all, records include an abstract. Now includes tables of contents, previously provided by the ContentsFirst service.

Arts and Humanities Citation Index

Access information:Access on and off-campus.
Description:Part of ISI Web of Knowledge. A multidisciplinary index containing details of every substantive item in 1,200 arts and humanities journals, as well as references to books included in book reviews, and live performances, films, records, and television and radio broadcasts. Contains over 2 million references; abstracts are not included.
Coverage:1975 to date.

Asahi Shimbun Kikuzo

Access information.Available on campus. Off campus access available using the VPN.
Description.Access to the current issues as well as the complete archive of the Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun. Also available are two weekly magazines, Aera and Shūkan Asahi, and an annual new-word dictionary Chiezō, Who’s Who Database, and Historical Photo Archive. For Asahi Shimbun, issues from 1985 to the present are available as full text; Pre-1985 issues back to 1879 when the newspaper was first published (as Osaka Asahi Shimbun) are available in facsimile format. The Historical Photo Archive contains more than 10,000 photographs, the majority ranging from before and after the Manchurian Incident to the period after the defeat in war.

Bibliography of Asian Studies Online

Access information:Access on and off-campus.
Description:Contains over 545,000 records on subjects (especially in the humanities and the social sciences) relating to East, Southeast, and South Asia published worldwide. Studies covering the period 1971 to 1991, as well as new entries compiled since.
Coverage:1971 to present.

Business Source Complete

Access information:Access on and off-campus.
Description:The world’s largest full text business database, Business Source Complete provides full text for nearly 3,300 scholarly business journals, including full text for more than 1000 peer-reviewed business publications. This database provides full text for more than 300 of the top scholarly journals. Updated daily.
Coverage:1922-present.

China Academic Journals

Access information:Access on and off-campus (select China Academic Journals)
Description:Full-text database of 5334 current academic journals published in China, some dating back to 1915. Contents are in simplified Chinese in PDF format.
The database is fully searchable by article title, journal title, author, and keyword in the full texts across all the journals and all the subjects. The default database platform is in English, but you can easily switch it to the Chinese interface at the top right corner. User Guide is also downloadable from the button at the very top of the database screen.
It covers a broad range of subjects in arts, humanities and social sciences such as Literature, History, Philosophy, Economics, Politics, Law and Education. In addition, we also have access to the year 2011 full-text content of 1206 Medicine & Public Health journals. Access to the science and engineering journals are at the indexing level only.
Coverage:1915 to present (except for Medicine & Public Health journals which are for year 2011 only).

China Core Newspapers (access to index level content only)

Access information:Access on and off-campus. Acces to index level content only.
Description:A full-text database of articles from 1,000 newspapers in China. Although we have not purchased the full-text access, searching for bibliographical information is free.
Coverage:2000 to present.

China Doctor/Master Dissertations Full-Text Database (access to index level content only)

Access information:Access on and off-campus (select China Doctor/Master Dissertations Full-Text Database). Please note only index level content available.
Description:This database contains over 220,000 full-text dissertations provided by 300 Chinese higher education institutions, covering many subjects including literature, history, philosophy, economics, politics, law, education, science, engineering, medicine, and agriculture. Although we have not purchased full text access, searching for bibliographical information is free, including abstracts.
Coverage:2000 onwards.

Chinamaxx Digital Library

Access information:Available on and off campus.
Description:This is a digital library of some 710,000 Chinese e-books covering all subjects of learning. The Library has purchased no more than 1,000 e-books from this database. All the titles, whether purchased or not, can be searched and contents displayed. Purchased items can be read in full text in their entirety while other items are available as full text for the first 17 pages.
We will continue to purchase more items on user recommendation. If you see anything important to you, click on ‘tuijian’ (recommend) and the whole book will be available within a week.
Chinese e-books from this database are not yet listed in the Library’s Catalogue.

Chinese Science Citation Index

Access information:Access on-campus. Available off campus via VPN.
Description:Information on more than 3 million articles with 17 million citations, covering the contents of over 1,000 core Chinese journals. Subject areas include mathematics, physics, chemistry, astronomy, geology, biology, agriculture, engineering, medicine, health, and environmental science.
Note:The database platform is in Chinese. However, it is also searchable in English because many articles have an English abstract.
Coverage:1989 onwards.

Complete Classics of Ancient China

Access information:Access on and off campus (Choose [IP access] next to The Complete Classics Collection of Ancient China at the top of the page).
Description:The digital edition of the great encyclopedic compendium of the most important classics of China. The original printed copy was completed in 1726, consisting of 6 series and 6109 titles and covering nearly every subject in pre-18th century China such as astronomy, geography, history, philosophy, literature, politics, economy, art, education, agriculture, medicine. Contents are displayed in both text and image formats, and are fully searchable in traditional Chinese characters.
The compendium is the biggest of its kind in the world (only exceeded in scope by another Chinese encyclopedia, the 15th century Yong Le Da Dian most of which had been destroyed during wars). Ideal for quickly looking up most topics relating to pre-18th century China.

Dissertations and Theses

Access information:Access on campus. Available off campus using the VPN.
Description:Indexes doctoral dissertations and master's theses from more than 700 universities worldwide. May provide 24 page previews. (Formerly called Digital Dissertations, this is the online version of Dissertation Abstracts).
Note: The subscription does not include access to the full text. You can pay for complete electronic copies of dissertations from Dissertations and Theses. However, items may be available through the Inter-Library Loan service.
Coverage:From 1861 to date. Abstracts included from 1980 onwards.

Duxiu

Access information:Access on and off campus.
Description:Duxiu provides the bibliographical and full text level search for several million Chinese resources including books, journal and newspaper articles, dissertations and conference proceedings. The table of contents and a small proportion of the body text can be read instantly by clicking on search results.
You can also obtain more or the whole of the full text content by using the online “document delivery service” on the database platform: at the document request window, fill in page range you want to have along with your email address then send your request. The delivery normally takes 3-5 minutes to arrive. You can request up to 50 pages or no more than 20% of any book per week, which ever is greater. Journal and newspaper articles can usually be received in full at one go.

GeNii - NII Academic Contents Portal

Access information:Available on and off campus from GeNii.
Description:Comprehensive Japanese online resource provided by the National Institute of Informatics in Japan. It includes four sub-databases covering indexes of books, journal articles, theses, as well as database repository for academic research. Access is free, except for the full texts of academic papers in CiNii.

Japan Knowledge +NK

Access information.Available on campus. Off campus access available using the VPN.
Description.Japan Knowledge +NK is a portal to Japanese encyclopedias and dictionaries as well as databases for Japanese weekly journals and books. Contents include the Kodansha Encyclopedia of Japan, Encyclopedia Nipponica, the Biographical Dictionary of Japan, Japanese-English/English-Japanese Dictionaries, Dictionary of Contemporary Words, Imidas (Innovative Multi-Information Dictionary), Shogakukan Unabridged Dictionary of the Japanese Language, Jitsu/Great Dictionary of Chinese Characters, Digital Dai-ji-sen Japanese Dictionary, Weekly Economist, Japanese Company Handbook, JK Who’s Who, and NNA Global Business News from Asia and Europe. Books include Toyo Bunko and Shogakukan Japanese Classical Literature.

JSTOR

Access information:Access on and off-campus.
Description:Full-text journal archive service providing access to complete back runs of all the scholarly journals currently available in JSTOR. Recent volumes are excluded, usually the last 3-5 years, but each year a further year is added to the archive.
Each title is listed in the Library catalogue.
The collections currently available are: Arts & Sciences 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8; Biological Sciences; Health & General Sciences; Ireland. The 19th Century British Pamphlets Collections is also available via JSTOR.

Late Qing Dynasty Full Text Periodicals 1833-1911

Access information: Available on and off campus.
Description:The database contains the full text of over 300 periodicals published in the late Qing Dynasty of China. This represents an almost complete collection of the Chinese periodical publications during that period, the beginning of such literature in China.
It is an important resource on the history, literature and social conditions of the late Qing dynasty.

Naver News Library

Access information:Access on and off campus.
Description:Naver News Library is a full-text Korean newspaper article database containing the following four major newspapers: Tonga ilbo (Dong-A ilbo) 1920-1999; Kyŏnghyang sinmun (Kyunghyang Shinmun) 1946-1999; Maeil kyŏngje sinmun (Maeil Business Newspaper) 1966-1999; and Han’gyŏre (The Hankyoreh ) 1988-1999.
The database is full text searable with three display options - original text, Han'gul version text and original images.

North China Herald (1850-1940)

Access information: Available on campus or off campus via VPN.
Description:The English North China Herald is universally acclaimed as the prime printed source in any language for the history of the foreign presence in China from around 1850 to the 1940s.
During this so-called ‘treaty century’ (1842-1943) the Great Western Powers established a strong presence in China through their protected enclaves in the major cities. It was published in Shanghai, at the heart of China’s dealing with the Euro-American world and a city at the forefront of developments in Chinese politics, culture, education and the economy.
As the official journal for British consular notifications, and announcements of the Shanghai Municipal Council, it is the first - and sometimes only - point of reference for information and comment on a range of foreign and Chinese activities.

People's Daily

Description:Complete archives of the People's Daily (Ren min ri bao) newspaper from 1946 to one year ago from now. People's Daily is the most important official newspaper in China, recording social, economic and political life in the country. The database can be browsed by date, and is searchable by date, article title, author, and keyword in the full text. This database is in simplified Chinese.

Policing the Shanghai International Settlement, 1894-1945

Access:Access on campus. Off campus access is available via the VPN.
Description:These files represent a large portion of the archives of the British-run municipal police force based in Shanghai's former International Settlement. This self-governing area was administered not by the Chinese but by the international group of merchants and bankers who paid the taxes and controlled the municipal council. The Special Branch of the Shanghai Municipal Police was charged with providing an orderly environment for Shanghai's foreign trade and commerce.

Si Ku Quan Shu

Access information:Access on and off campus. Client software required.
On campus: This resource can only be accessed via the Client Program. This program is available on all the open access lab computers across the University. From the Program list, click on “the electronic version of SKQS”. The Client Program will then be loaded. Click on the icon of this program in the task bar at the bottom of the page. When the program is opened, click on “IP Login”.
Off campus/own PC: To access SKQS on your own laptop or desktop computer at home: Download and install the Client Program from here:

Once the client program is installed, open the program and select IP Login. Please ensure that you are within the University IP range either by using the university wireless network or the VPN connection.
Description:Digital version of the definitive Wenyuange edition of Siku Quanshu, the great collection of Chinese classics compiled from 1773 to 1793 under Qianlong Emperor. It encompasses 3,503 titles or 79,337 volumes of works on all subjects divided into four broad categories. The East Asian Collection in the Main Library has a reprint of the complete collection bound in 1,500 volumes.

Social Sciences Citation Index

Description:Provided by Web of Knowledge. Indexes 2,100 core journals in all areas of the social sciences, plus relevant items from 3,500 scientific and technical journals. Contains over 2.3 million reference, over half with abstracts.

Yomidas Rekishikan

Access information.Available on campus. Off campus access available using the VPN.
Description.Full text database of Yomiuri Shimbun, one of the most influential daily newspapers in Japan, from the first issue in 1874 to the present. The database also includes the English edition, The Daily Yomiuri, from 1989 to the present (by selecting ‘English’ on the upper right side of the homepage), as well as biographical information on some 26,000 people.
