Students from two thirds of the world’s countries study at the University. Gather is a chance to celebrate the vibrant and diverse community that this creates, focusing on different cultures and the idea of global citizenship within Edinburgh.
The festival runs from 14 - 22 March 2014, with 66 events being held.
Each day is packed with events from dance workshops to gallery tours, with plenty of food and drink. Highlights include:
St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in Teviot
Rhythm and Roots - Caribbean poetry and music
The ‘Tea Cup’ series of fun sporting events
Gather Grub international recipe swap
Gather at the Farm (for students with children)
Tai Chi & Chai Tea at the Confucius Institute and at Easter Bush
Celebrating culture, powered by tea
The festival recognises tea as something universal - it brings people together. Many of the events are tea-themed, with tasting sessions to take you from Scotland and Venezuela to China, India, East Africa, and beyond.
The celebration of sporting culture known as the ‘Tea Cup’ includes five-a-side football , a pool competition, a cross-country fun run and indoor climbing taster sessions.
The Just Gather Film Festival will offer free screenings of shorts and features, with workshops, Q&As, and social events. Students can also submit a short film to the Just Gather competition.
The Multilingualism Live! language cafe provides the chance to sample new languages in a relaxed setting, while mini-festivals celebrate different cultures with food, dance, crafts, and music.
So come ‘Gather’ and try something new - whether it’s a language or a dance move - and, of course, enjoy the tea.
