Support the Fairtrade Rice Challenge

Students and staff are boosting Fair Trade rice sales across campus, selling more than the target of 90kg - a challenge set by Fairtrade organisation Just Trading Scotland (JTS).

Rice challenge

During Fairtrade Fortnight, JTS challenges schools and universities across the UK to sell 90kg of Malawian rice on campus. 90kg is the amount of rice sold that would enable a Malawian child to attend one year of secondary education.

Target smashed

The University’s department for Social Responsibility and Sustainability is exceeding the target by distributing 120kg of rice to various groups on campus, including the department’s staff, Edinburgh University Students’ Association (EUSA), FoodSharing Edinburgh, several self-catered student accommodations, and the student-led Hearty Squirrel Food Cooperative. FoodSharing Edinburgh used nearly 43 kg of the rice for their recent Disco Soup, an event aimed at raising awareness of food waste.
