Reverend F A Smith (1948–2010)

Reverend Fergus A Smith, former University of Edinburgh Chaplain, died on Thursday 26 August 26 2010, following a short illness.

Reverend Smith was born in Glasgow on 27 June 1948.

He attended the universities of Glasgow and Cambridge, and undertook a period of study in Vienna.

Following ordination by the Edinburgh Presbytery, he served as the University of Edinburgh’s Chaplain.

In 1988, he took the position of Senior Minister and Head of Staff at First Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia.

One of his most notable achievements in this role was the formation of the Metropolitan Area Neighborhood Nutrition Alliance in Philadelphia.

This organization provides services to men, women and children living with HIV, cancer and other life-threatening illnesses.

Reverend Smith most recently served as the Chaplain for Hospice de la Luz in Albuquerque, as well as Pulpit Supply for the Santa Fe Presbytery.

Fergus Smith, a beloved pastor, was known to be a thought-provoking and highly intelligent preacher and a man of unfailing compassion.

He is survived by his nephew, Keith Smith and wife Melissa; grand-niece, Alison and grand-nephew, Colin; as well as many friends and colleagues who loved and will miss him.
