Honorary Professor: Marie Murphy

Marie Murphy has been made an Honorary Professor in the College of Humanities & Social Science.

Professor Murphy, who joins Moray House School of Education, is currently Chair of Exercise and Health at Ulster University.

She also leads Ulster’s Centre for Physical Activity and Health Research.

Research

Professor Murphy is a British Association of Sport & Exercise Sciences (BASES) accredited physiologist. She is also a high performance coach and director at City of Lisburn Salto National Gymnastics Centre.

Her research focuses on the effects of physical activity and, in particular, walking interventions, in healthy and diseased populations

She is interested in the effects of accumulated bouts of exercise, lifestyle, physical activity and interrupting sedentary behaviour on health outcomes.

Biography

Professor Murphy completed her undergraduate degree at Ulster University and received her MSc and PhD from Loughborough University.

She is a fellow of the American Colleges of Sports Medicine, of BASES, and of the Higher Education Authority.

She was a member of the expert scientific panel behind the 2011 UK Physical Activity Guidelines 'Start Active Stay Active', and of the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014 sub-panel for Sport & Exercise Sciences, Leisure and Tourism.

Professor Murphy has held public appointments on the General Teaching Council Northern Ireland, the board of Sport Northern Ireland, and the Sports Institute for Northern Ireland.
