Professor David Manning

Professor Manning has been Professor of Soil Science at Newcastle University since 2000.

He was a founding member of the UK Biochar Research Centre and is currently President of the Geological Society of London.

Research

Professor Manning specialises in understanding reactions between minerals and living systems within soils, and how these influence global phenomena such as atmospheric CO2 and plant nutrition.

His current research focuses on carbon capture in soils, as carbonate minerals and biochar, and on potassium release from silicate minerals as fertilizers. He is conducting a major industry project in Brazil.

Biography

Professor Manning studied BSc Geology at Durham University and a PhD in experimental petrology at the University of Manchester.

He has previously held a National Environment Research Council fellowship at the University of Manchester and a Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique fellowship in the Centre de Recherches Pétrographiques et Géochimiques (Nancy), working on tin and tungsten mineralization.

His previous roles include lecturer in geology at Newcastle University, focusing on experimental investigations of petroleum in ore-forming processes.

He was also Professor of Environmental Geochemistry at the University of Manchester, conducting experimental work on sandstone diagenesis and fieldwork on landfills.

In 2004 he received the Schlumberger Medal from the Mineralogical Society.
