Personal Chair: Penny Fielding

Penny Fielding has been made a Personal Chair in 19th-century Literature.

She studied at the University of Oxford for her MA and DPhil.

She held lectureships at the University of Bristol and Trinity College Dublin before moving to Edinburgh in 1995.

Professor’s Fielding’s books include ‘Writing and Orality’ (Oxford, 1996) and ‘Scotland and the Fictions of Geography’ (Cambridge, 2008).

She edited Scott’s 'The Monastery' for the Edinburgh Edition of the 'Waverley Novels' and is a General Editor of ‘The New Edinburgh Edition of Robert Louis Stevenson’.

Her research interests include Scottish writing of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and she is now working on a project on the relationship between literature and espionage.
