Euan Clarkson has been made a Senior Honorary Professorial Fellow in the College of Science and Engineering.

Professor Clarkson received a First Class BA in Geology from Cambridge University in 1960, and a PhD in 1964 on functional morphology in trilobites.

He was appointed Assistant Lecturer at Edinburgh University in 1963.

He rose through the positions of Lecturer (1967), Senior Lecturer (1978), Reader (1981), and Professor of Palaeontology (1998). He retired in 2002.

He taught palaeontology, field mapping, map interpretation and regional and general geology.

Professor Clarkson was appointed FRSE in 1984 and awarded the DSc degree (Edinburgh) in 1983.

His textbook "Invertebrate Palaeontology and Evolution" ran to four editions.

Two other books with Brian Upton on Scottish geology followed, as well as 135 research articles.

He was involved with Scottish geology and palaeontology, and worked on trilobite ontogeny and Cambrian trilobites with colleagues in Argentina and China.

His other interests include painting, story writing, classical music, gardening and, most importantly, his six grandchildren.
