Honorary Professor: Michael Sharpe

Michael Sharpe has been awarded an Honorary Professorship with the College of Medicine & Veterinary Medicine.

He is Professor of Psychological Medicine and a Fellow of Saint Cross College at the University of Oxford.

He initially studied experimental psychology in Oxford, then medicine in London and Cambridge before returning to Oxford to train in psychiatry.

Professor Sharpe moved to Edinburgh as a Senior Lecturer in Psychiatry in 1997. He developed close and productive research collaborations with the departments of neurology, oncology and primary care.

He also developed teaching for medical students on psychological aspects of medicine. He moved to his current post in Oxford in September 2011.

His research focuses on psychological and psychiatric treatments for patients with chronic medical illnesses including depression in cancer patients, symptoms that are not explained by disease, and chronic fatigue syndrome, sometimes called ME.

His work in these areas has had a major influence on practice and on treatment guidelines.

He is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London and Edinburgh and of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. He is also a Fellow and member of Council of the American Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine.

In 2009 he was awarded Psychiatric Academic of the Year by the UK Royal College of psychiatrists.
