The Quaternary Research Association, a renowned cross-disciplinary body concerned with the most recent period of Earth history, presented the award.

Professor Boulton was given the prize in recognition of his significant contributions to the understanding of glaciation.

The award is named after 19th-century Scottish scientist James Croll who first enunciated the now accepted Croll-Milankovitch theory of astronomical controls of long-term climate change.
