Chair of Biological Psychiatry: Andrew McIntosh

Andrew McIntosh has been made Chair of Biological Psychiatry.

He is Associate Director of the Scottish Mental Health Research Network and an Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist in NHS Lothian.

Professor McIntosh graduated in Medicine in 1995 from the University of Aberdeen and obtained his MD from the University of Edinburgh in 2004.

His main research interests have been in the use of brain imaging, genetics and neuropsychology to better understand the underlying mechanisms of major psychiatric disorder.

He has held a Medical Research Council Clinical Training Fellowship and an Academy of Medical Sciences Clinician Scientist Fellowship. He now holds a Scottish Funding Council Senior Clinical Fellowship.

Professor McIntosh has authored more than 100 papers and book chapters. He subsequently trained in statistics (obtaining an MSc with distinction) to support the quantitative aspects of his research. He has undertaken additional postgraduate training in genetics.

Professor McIntosh’s research work has recently expanded to include the study of stem cell derived tissues from people with rare psychosis-causing genetic mutations.

He is married to Claire and they have two children, Ben and Sarah. Outside of work he enjoys watching football and travelling overseas with his family.
