He is also Director of the Centre for Materials Science & Engineering.

He played a leading part in establishing the Centre for Science at Extreme Conditions.

He read chemistry at Oxford where he then obtained a DPhil in physical chemistry before taking a lectureship in civil engineering at the University of Manchester in 1972.

In 1983 he was appointed Head, Rock and Fluid Physics at Schlumberger Cambridge Research (SCR), was later Head, Chemical Technology at Dowell Schlumberger and then returned to SCR as Scientific Adviser.
