The start date for the new Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Peter Mathieson, has been agreed as 5 February 2018.

Current Principal, Professor Sir Timothy O’Shea, has agreed to remain in post until the new Principal joins the University in the New Year. He announced his intention to demit office in June 2016.

Since his arrival in 2002, Professor O’Shea has presided over a period of unprecedented growth for Edinburgh, which has seen it regularly ranked among the leading universities in the world.

The University of Edinburgh is growing to be an even stronger force for good in the world. Being part of this wonderful community has been such a rich and rewarding experience for me.

Professor Sir Timothy O’Shea

The appointment of Professor Mathieson, who is currently President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hong Kong, was announced in February of this year.

Professor Mathieson has a background in medical research and teaching.

Like Hong Kong, Edinburgh is a truly global institution with a great reputation for excellence in teaching and research. Working together with students, staff and supporters I am confident we can build on that reputation in the future.
