Steve Morrison confirmed as Rector

Steve Morrison has been confirmed as the University’s 52nd Rector.

An Edinburgh alumnus, he is a TV producer and broadcaster.

Mr Morrison took 2,666 votes in the Rectorial Election 2015, winning 62 per cent of the total vote. He defeated the serving Rector, Peter McColl.

Mr Morrison holds both an undergraduate degree and an honorary doctorate in social science from the University.

He was the first student to run for Rector in 1969.

He is a member of the advisory board of Edinburgh College of Art.

Biography

After graduating from university, Mr Morrison attended the National Film and Television School and then joined Granada Television in 1974.

He formed Granada Film, which won two Academy Awards for ‘My Left Foot’, and later became the Granada’s Director of Programmes and then Chief Executive.

He left to found All3Media, Britain’s largest independent TV production group.

Mr Morrison was instrumental in the formation of the campaign group Third World First, which went on to become the anti-poverty organisation People & Planet.
