Edinburgh was selected as the winner of the Fairtrade Foundation’s Best Steps Activity award and for the ninth consecutive year has been granted Fairtrade University status.
Influential leader
Since becoming the first Scottish university to be accredited by the Fairtrade Foundation in 2004, Edinburgh has developed into a leader on fair trade and related issues.
The University works alongside the business sector to increase public awareness in supply chain issues and to research and develop innovative solutions and technologies.
Policies and practice
In collaboration with EUSA, the University has also introduced policies to embed fair trade practice into University culture.
For example, teas, coffees and hot chocolates served at EUSA or Edinburgh First catering outlets or at official meetings of staff and students are obtained by fair trade.
Student society People & Planet has also made a significant contribution to supporting fair trade through a range of activities including outreach work with local schools.
Network
A Fair Trade Academic Network has been established at the University to encourage academics to embed the debate about fair trade issues into teaching and learning, as part of a wider social responsibility and sustainability strategy.
Anyone with any ideas about how to introduce fair trade to the curriculum, or who is looking for suggested research/dissertation topics, should contact Angela Lewthwaite, Secretary of the Fair Trade Academic Network.
Be a champion
To support the University’s commitment to fair trade, staff or students volunteers are needed to take on the role of fair trade champion.
Fair trade champions raise awareness of fair trade in their buildings, departments, student societies, academic schools or support units.
Volunteering is recognised by the Edinburgh Award for students.
Taking part could count towards team efforts to gain a Gold, Silver or Bronze Edinburgh Sustainability Award, or the Edinburgh Award for students.
To get involved, contact Jane Rooney, Secretary of the Fairtrade Steering Group.
