Award for geoscientist

University geoscientist Professor Paul Palmer has received international recognition for his work in the field of space science.

He has been awarded the Zeldovich Medal, an honour offered jointly by the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) and the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Honouring Zeldovich

Zeldovich Medals are conferred upon scientists aged 36 and under for research excellence and achievements in the field of space science.

They are awarded to honour the memory of prolific Russian astrophysicist Yakov B Zeldovich.

Professor Palmer received the accolade in recognition of his contributions in the modelling of the transport of trace gases in the atmosphere using Earth observation from space.

The researcher, based within the University’s School of GeoSciences, was appointed Professor of Quantitative Earth Observation in 2009.

A graduate from both the universities of Bristol and Oxford, Professor Palmer joined Edinburgh as a lecturer in 2006.

He was appointed a Visiting Research Scientist for the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Colorado, US, in 2006 and was a recipient of the Philip Leverhulme Prize in 2008.
