Course Summary
This module will provide students with knowledge and experience of techniques of project planning and management that are required to achieve project objectives effectively. This will include:Defining the project required to achieve the objectivesDescribing and managing a scope of work and organisation to achieve themAchieving the objectives to the required specification and within budgetBuilding and controlling a project teamEnsuring timely and effective completionUnderstanding the role of a project managerCase study examples of projects relevant to ecological science will accommodate a range of student interest. Experience and appreciation of tools and techniques will allow students to assess their own need for further development.

Project definition reports. Group exercise.Course assessment details issued.Week 2 Class 3 Milestone Plans and Responsibility Charts. Group exercise.Week 2 Class 4 Group exercise: Research Project Planning. Week 3 Class 5 Managing quality, cost and time. Bar charts and critical path networks. Group Exercise: Project duration and critical paths.Deadline to hand in assessment topic for approval.Week 3 Class 6 Project Management software - MS Project. Individual exercises. Week 4 Class 7 Project Management Software - MS Project Individual exercises.Week 4 Class 8 The Project Leader. Working with teams. Team roles. Self-perception questionnaire.Group exercise in teams with video recording. Team prize.Week 5 Class 9 Individual & Group exercise: The Project Planning Situation. Rational and interpersonal skills. Written Exam: 0%, Course Work: 100 %, Practical Exam: 0%.There will be one major assessment comprising the preparation of a project definition report outlining an environmental project of your own choice that has been approved by the course organiser.Assessment deadlines The deadline for submission of the assessment topic for approval is Monday week 3. The assessment must be handed in by 12 noon on Friday week 6.
